Edward Dorn

Born in 1929 in Eastern Illinois, Dorn attended Black Mountain College during the 1950s and would come to prominence with the publication of several remarkable early poems in Donald Allen’s renowned anthology The New American Poetry. Dorn’s many books published over four decades in the U.S. and U.K. include The Collected Poems 1956–1974, Recollections of Gran Apacheria and several volumes of translations from Spanish, Portuguese and Native American languages, done with Gordon Brotherston, and collected in the 1999 volume The Sun Unwound: Original Texts from Occupied America. Dorn’s novel The Rites of Passage was later issued as By the Sound, the long dramatic narrative poem Gunslinger issued serially, and eventually collected in 1975.
