George Stanley

Born in San Francisco, poet George Stanley has lived in British Columbia since the early 1970s, first in Vancouver, then in Terrace and now back in Vancouver. A former English instructor at Capilano College, he has published eight books: After Desire: The Observations of a Poet, Vancouver: A Poem, At Andy’s, Gentle Northern Summer, Opening Day, The Stick and You. He won the 2006 Shelley Memorial Award from the Poetry Society of America. In 1957, Stanley participated in Jack Spicer’s Poetry as Magic workshop, a Poetry Center-hosted program held at San Francisco Main Public Library, with the readings from the group archived by the Poetry Center. He read for the Poetry Center, with Ebbe Borregaard, in 1958. Stanley earned his Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees from SF State.
