Writers on Writing: Anhvu Buchanan and Roxane Johnson
The Creative Writing Department opens its Writers on Writing course to the public every Monday evening of the semester. Taught by Donna de la Perrière, the course features faculty and visiting writers reading from their works and discussing their creative process.
Anhvu Buchanan
Buchanan is the author of the poetry collections The Disordered (sunnyoutside press, 2013) and Backhanded Compliments and Other Ways to Say I Love You (Works on Paper Press, 2013). He received the 2010 James D. Phelan Award and an Individual Artists Grant from the San Francisco Arts Commission. His poems have also appeared or are forthcoming in Columbia Poetry Review, Cream City Review, Harpur Palate, The Journal, kill author, The Minnesota Review, Parthenon West Review, word for/ word, Vinyl Poetry and ZYZZYVA. He earned his Master of Fine Arts in Creative Writing from SF State. He blogs for the Diasporic Vietnamese Artists Network and is a teaching artist for WritersCorps.
Roxane Johnson
Johnson’s first book of poetry, Jublilee (Anhinga, 2006), won the 2005 Philip Levine Prize for Poetry. She won an Association of Writers and Writing Programs Prize in Poetry and a 2007 Pushcart Prize. She has received scholarships and fellowships from The MacDowell Colony, Cave Canem, The Bread Loaf Writers’ Conference, San Francisco Arts Commission and Vermont Studio Center. Her work has appeared in or is forthcoming from The Georgia Review, Prairie Schooner, Image, Callaloo, The Pushcart Prize Anthology, Beloit Poetry Journal, Chelsea, ZYZZYVA, The Bitter Oleander, Sentence and elsewhere.
