Boelte was born in a small town on the high plains of Kansas, grew up near Denver and moved to San Francisco as an adult. A finalist for the Annie Dillard Award, his writing has appeared in Orion Magazine, Full Stop, Sierra, The Rumpus, The Millions and High Country News.

The Creative Writing Department opens its Writers on Writing course to the public on Mondays this semester. Taught by Peter Orner, the course features faculty and visiting writers reading from their works and discussing their creative process.
