La Calisto

This opera is powered by LUST. Unable to score with Calisto through the usual way, Jove is transgender for a day and seduces Calisto by becoming Diana, the virgin goddess whom Calisto follows. And it only gets crazier from there. This comedy of switched genders, mistaken identities and repressed and not-so-repressed desires is transposed from ancient Arcadia to present-day Humboldt County. Where else to find a lust-driven guru, yoga-hippie girls, a lovelorn park ranger and rednecks looking for love in all the wrong places? Opera by Francesco Cavalli from a libretto by Giovanni Faustini. Directed by Christine Brandes. May 1 - May 2, 7:30pm. May 3, 2pm. $5.
