Bay Bridge Closed Labor Day Weekend Beginning August 28

Friday, August 23, 2013

Closure of the Bay Bridge beginning 8pm on Wednesday, August 28, is apt to cause massive transportation problems for students (as well as faculty and staff) August 29 and 30.

Dear faculty,

BART employees and management continue to be at odds over a new contract. A court issued 60-day cooling off period has prevented service interruptions so far, but that period expires October 11, 2013, about mid-term exam time at SF State. Since BART serves more than 400,000 people per day, a strike or other service interruption could have a significant impact on regional transportation, and it would affect our many students who commute to SF State from the East Bay.

If a strike occurs, SF State operations will continue as usual. However, as you are preparing your syllabi, you might take this potential disruptive situation into account as you schedule exam and assignment dates and as you outline expectations for attendance.

Additionally, please encourage your students to plan ahead so that they have other transportation options should BART service be interrupted. One new resource is an SF State rideshare website, and other transit service options can be found at 511.org.
