SF State is grateful for the generosity of alumni and friends. All donors who contribute gifts of $100 or more are acknowledged in the Annual Report to Contributors.

Dean of the College of Liberal and Creative Arts Paul Sherwin will retire from SF State effective July 1. Efforts are underway to create an endowment in his honor.

A Yale Ph.D. graduate in English with specializations in British Romanticism and literary theory, Sherwin has to his credit a University Press book (1977) and several articles, including two that are often reprinted in publications of the Modern Language Association (1978, 1981). Sherwin has served for 12 years as an administrator at SF State: the first nine as dean of the College of Humanities and the last three as dean of the larger College of Liberal and Creative Arts.

Sherwin has hired 110 tenure-track faculty since joining SF State in 2002, several of whom have gone on to receive fellowships from Guggenheim, the National Endowment for the Humanities and National Endowment for the Arts and grants from the National Science Foundation.

He began his academic career in 1971 at the City College of New York/CUNY, where he served both as dean of humanities (1982 – 90)/arts and humanities (1990 – 93) and as acting vice president for development (1993-95). He was was dean of arts and sciences at Long Island University from 1996 to 2002. Over the course of his administrative career, Sherwin has been solely or largely responsible for raising about $40 million from individuals, foundations and government agencies.

Work has begun to create a $25,000 endowment in his name to support the scholarly and creative work of faculty of the college. Such an endowment will continue and extend the legacy of his efforts for the college and University.
