This year’s Northern California Area Emmy Awards was again a de facto reunion for alumni. SF State is the alma mater for 14 of the winners in 63 categories. Gators were responsible for 31 nominations.
Winners
Longtime KGO-Channel 7 anchor Cheryl Jennings (B.A., Radio and Television, ’79) took home the statuette for evening newscast, specifically honored for the 5pm time slot.
Ken Bastida (B.A., Radio and Television, ’80), the popular anchor at KPIX-Channel 5, shared the general assignment report award for a story on San Francisco’s favorite youth superhero —Batkid — with designer Ashley Neal (B.A., Art, ’06) and others.
Also at KPIX, photographer Brian Yuen (B.A., Radio and Television, ’88) was honored with colleagues in the “serious” feature news category, for a report on the illegal, yet routine, practice of California State Assembly members casting votes for other lawmakers.
Paul Hodges III (B.A., Radio and Television, ’01) and Brad Martens (B.A., Radio and Television, ’09) worked together for the San Francisco Giants’ Inside the Clubhouse show that airs on Comcast SportsNet Bay Area. Although the team didn’t win the World Series last year, this program won two awards: in sports program/series and sports feature/segment, with Hodges serving as executive producer/director and Martens as digital media coordinator.
Michael Ostler (B.A., Cinema, ’07), an associate producer for Comcast SportsNet Bay Area, won in the one-time special sports category for the program 2013: A Year to Remember.
Sports-talk personality Dan Dibley (B.A., Radio and Television, ’03) calls play-by-play for Major League Soccer’s San Jose Earthquakes on Comcast SportsNet California, bending in a win for the live sporting event category.
Alex Bozovic (B.A., Radio and Television, ’97) of KNTV-Channel 11 was recognized for his news editing chops. Bozovic, a video editor and photographer, focuses on longer format news stories, specials and documentaries.
Alumni also fared well at KCTV-Channel 14, a Spanish-language affiliate of the Univision network. Reporter Flavio Lacayo (B.A., Radio and Television, ’98) won the Spanish general-assignment report award for his piece titled “Deportation Stopped.” Javier Barreto (B.A., Radio and Television, ’02) took home the commercial-single spot or campaign award, serving as the producer, editor, animator and graphic designer for a commercial promoting KBRG-100.3, a Spanish-language radio station in the Bay Area.
At The FIlipino Channel’s (ABS-CBN International) Adobo Nation program, videographer Joseph Perry (B.A., Radio and Television, ’03) shared the historic/cultural-program feature/segment honors for a show that featured the Brisbane restaurant 7 Mile House. Also at The Filipino Channel, lighting director Eugene Libadia (B.A., Radio and Television, ’93) took home a public service announcement award.
Finally, reporter Angela Greenwood (B.A., Radio and Television, ’10) of KSEE-Channel 24 (Fresno) won the light feature honors for her story about a garbage man and young child who have developed a friendship.
This year’s SF State success is nothing new — ten alumni won awards at the 2013 Northern California Area Emmy Awards.
This year’s ceremony was held June 14 in San Francisco. The Northern California Area Emmy Awards, presented by the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences’ San Francisco/Northern California chapter, recognize excellence in television and online production. The Northern California competition includes television and cable stations from the following areas: Sacramento-Stockton-Modesto, San Francisco-Oakland-San Jose, Fresno-Visalia, Honolulu, Reno, Monterey-Salinas, Chico-Redding and Eureka.
