GOLDEN GATE XPRESS -- “When you’re at sea for six months, it’s a very hard life,” said Daniel Bernardi, interim dean of SF State’s College of Liberal and Creative Arts, who spent 20 years in the Navy and is still in the reserves. For Fleet Week “you get to go into a city where you get people who say thank you for your service. It’s especially important for young people.” The purpose of Fleet Week, which has been held in various cities since 1935, is to boost morale for sailors who can spend as long as six months at sea.
