KGO-CHANNEL 7 -- “Profiles of Excellence” is an Emmy Award-winning series produced by the ABC7 Public Affairs Department to celebrate the Bay Area’s rich cultural diversity. For the past 26 years, the program has been featuring local residents who have made important contributions to the community.

History Professor Catherine Kudlick serves as the director of the Paul K. Longmore Institute on Disability at San Francisco State University. Blind at birth, Kudlick has focused her career on shifting how people think about the disability community.

“Our main goal is to get people to think differently about disability,” Kudlick says, “to turn it into this source of ingenuity, excitement (and) engagement, and to walk away from all those stories about overcoming adversity or pity or any of them, and to say, ‘Look, we’re here, let’s enjoy it and let’s learn from everything.’”
