UNION DEMOCRAT (SONORA) -- The longtime Tuolumne County couple volunteer together at Railtown 1897 State Historic Park in Jamestown, mostly due to David’s interest in locomotives and lifelong work with boilers. David was born in Pawtucket, Rhode Island, but moved with family to the Oakdale area before high school. Karen grew up in nearby Modesto, but the couple didn’t meet until college, which they remembered with a laugh. David was studying at the California Maritime Academy and beginning his service time in the U.S. Merchant Marine out of San Francisco. Karen was studying Spanish and business at San Francisco State University, but the couple attended the same church.
