SAN FRANCISCO CHRONICLE -- “It is a sad fact of life is that my age group, 18-to-24-year-olds, do not vote. Only 8.2 percent of us cast a ballot in the last gubernatorial election. Many of my friends say they don’t vote because they don’t know how government works or what their candidates do after they are elected. In San Francisco, many of us feel like we don’t have a stake in what’s going on at City Hall because we don’t have time to go there, even if the issues we care about are being discussed. “That’s why my classmates at San Francisco State University, led by Political Science Professor David Lee, submitted more than 16,000 signatures to qualify the Sunshine and Open Government Act for the November ballot. On Thursday, the San Francisco Department of Elections certified the petition. This act, if passed by San Francisco voters November 3, will fundamentally change how city government does business. I encourage all of you to support it.” Lia Quilty is a junior at SF State.
