In this photo, Emmy Award-winning journalist Belva Davis shares memories of fellow Bay Area broadcasting pioneer, Professor Emeritus Stuart Hyde. Former colleagues, students and administrators gathered in Knuth Hall on September 19 for a memorial event celebrating Hyde’s countless contributions to the broadcasting world and inspirations to thousands of students. Other notable alumni attended and spoke, including KCBS-AM anchor Stan Bunger, writer Ben Fong-Torres and Grammy-nominated producer and engineer Steven Miller.
Hyde profoundly influenced radio and television broadcasting in the Bay Area and beyond, through his 45 years of teaching and in his leadership roles at SF State. He authored widely used books on broadcasting including his classic text first published in 1959, Radio and Television Announcing, which has sold more than 150,000 copies and has undergone several updates and revisions. Other books included Idea to Script, which focused on writing for radio and television.
Hyde, who joined SF State in 1958, is a member of the Broadcast Legends and has been inducted in to the Bay Area Radio Hall of Fame and the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences Silver Circle. In 2012, Hyde was inducted into the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences Gold Circle, recognizing more than 50 years of outstanding contributions to the broadcast community.
Hyde died in April at age 91.
