SAN FRANCISCO CHRONICLE -- “These are dueling examples where both sides understand the policy is not going to change.” said Jason McDaniel, assistant professor of Political Science at San Francisco State University. “There is not enough political will or consensus to pass new laws that would change the policy.” While neither measure would force the city to change its policy or how the sheriff implements it, the impact could sway the opinions of San Francisco residents. “It’s a relatively easy way for politicians to communicate to the voters they are taking a stand on the issue without doing the hard work of passing laws and making legislation to change this, which might be very difficult,” McDaniel said.
