SAN FRANCISCO CHRONICLE -- Since leaving her post as the head of graduate photography studies at San Francisco State University in the late ’80s, artist Meridel Rubenstein has been to Eden and back. The trilogy “Eden Turned on Its Side” has consumed the Santa Fe artist for the past six years. Photographs printed on aluminum plates from the second part of the project, “The Volcano Cycle,” capturing active volcanoes in Indonesia’s “Ring of Fire,” are on exhibit at Brian Gross Fine Art. “Right from the beginning, I thought I wanted to understand, in terms of deep time and origination, wherever it was that humans came into existence,” says Rubenstein from Singapore, where she teaches for part of the year at the Nanyang Technological University.
