Alumnus Jeffrey Tambor received two cherished and prestigious holiday presents this week. He earned best lead actor nominations in both the Golden Globe and Screen Actors Guild (SAG) Awards for his landmark role in the series Transparent.
Tambor plays the main character in Transparent, Maura Pfefferman, a retired professor who comes out as transgender and begins to transition to a woman. The comedy’s second season is now streaming on Amazon.
Tambor (B.A., Drama, ’65) grew up in the Parkmerced apartment community, just across the street from the SF State campus. At age 8, he wandered into the Creative Arts Building and discovered a student play in the Little Theatre.
“I just sat down in a darkened theatre and watched it, and I couldn’t breathe, it’s so beautiful. I just thought, whatever it is they're doing up there, this is what I want to do,” he says in an interview with SF State Magazine.
A six-time Emmy Award nominee, Tambor may be best known for his role as patriarch George Bluth Sr. on Arrested Development. He has also starred in The Larry Sanders Show, Hill Street Blues and The Hangover.
