NEW YORK DAILY NEWS -- Oscar Zeta Acosta wasn’t just the drug-guzzling maniac shown on film — although he was certainly that — he was also a lawyer, Chicano activist and accomplished novelist in his own right. He may have had a bright future ahead of him, but he vanished without a trace in 1974 during a trip to Mexico. Born in El Paso in 1935, Oscar joined the Air Force before attending San Francisco State University and later finishing a law degree at San Francisco Law School. He worked for the East Oakland Legal Aid Society for a time, but despite his estimable profession, he dabbled in drugs just like his character on the silver screen.
