A team of Design and Industry students has developed a cart making it easier to walk home with from a big shopping trip, and it has gained recognition in an international contest.
The product, City Cart, is one of 12 finalists in the annual Stanford Center on Longevity’s Design Challenge. Students Brandon Lopez, Eric Renard and Hayden Roberts have the opportunity next month to win more than $10,000 each in cash prizes and entrepreneurial mentorship.
The other finalists hail from UC Berkeley, Stanford University, Virginia Tech and institutions in Singapore, Taiwan and Turkey.
The students developed their City Cart in Ricardo Gomes’ Product Design 2 class. Aimed for senior citizens and the disabled, City Cart is a walker/cart hybrid. Its sturdy base and comfortable handles provide stability. Its storage area is located at a high base, making it easy for users to reach their items without hurting their back. City Cart also features more storage than current carts available on the market.
This year’s Design Challenge invited university students to submit designs for new products which encourage everyone to live longer, fuller lives. Finals will be held April 5.
