PHILADELPHIA BUSINESS JOURNAL -- National Public Radio station WHYY has hired a former Yahoo! employee to fill a newly-created position of vice president for digital strategies and services. Gabriel Coan will be in charge of WHYY’s digital content, which largely includes its companion website Newsworks. Coan has spent his entire professional life in the San Francisco area. After graduating from San Francisco State University in 1997 with a degree in Broadcast and Electronic Communication Arts, he worked for a year as a recording engineer before taking a job at Yahoo, where he started a curator for its web products. He soon became an editor (2003 – 05) focused on news coverage and then senior editor (2005 – 07) working on its front page and personalized portals. After about nine years with Yahoo, he joined KQED, the PBS member television station in San Francisco, as online editor. In July 2012, Coan was promoted to director of interactive products and services.
