In the second episode of a College of Liberal & Creative Arts video series, student Ricardo Baltazar discusses his senior thesis, an educational campaign aimed at supporting LGBTQ youth transitioning from high school to college. Our “Next Stop”: the School of Design.

Titled +US, Baltazar’s campaign uses graphic design to create a safe space for the LGBTQ community by educating students about LGBTQ identities. He says the School of Design — formerly known as the Design and Industry Department — taught him the value of accepting failure when creating new work.

“We need to try multiple things before we get something that works, something that can make a difference,” Baltazar says. “And if you’re afraid to fail, then you’re not really going to be able to develop a good concept that will be effective and that can make an impact on the world.”
