SAN FRANCISCO CHRONICLE -- Since moving to San Francisco from Hawaii in 1989 for the experimental film program at San Francisco State (her undergraduate thesis film screened at Sundance in 1994), Chien hasn’t so much adapted to as collided with the zeitgeist — from the DIY punk scene to the tech boom to the current maker renaissance. As her friend Ann D’Apice, a design scout/consultant formerly with Apple puts it, “Windy seems to reflect where S.F. culture wants so be, sometimes before we even know it.” After spending two decades as a tastemaker and curator, Chien is the one in the spotlight now, effortlessly moving between decorative and fine art.
