At SF State, student violinist Annie Lee has discovered sources of inspiration far more dynamic and abstract than notes on sheet music. She represents the School of Music in the latest installment of the College of Liberal & Creative Arts’ video series, “Next Stop.”

“Through my classes I’ve learned that it’s not just the music on the page; there are also so many layers,” she says while rehearsing Felix Mendelssohn’s Violin Concerto in E minor, Op. 64. “My classes have helped me realize why the notes are structured in that way and why the dynamics are that way. It’s how to analyze the music in a way that better helps me understand how to play the music and how to put forward the emotion and the dynamics that are necessary for that piece.”
