EAST BAY TIMES -- In the Bay Area, Harawitz took a class taught by John Collier Jr. at San Francisco State University, who encouraged the young photographer and showed him peace demonstrations in Berkeley and other parts of the Bay Area. During the 1960s, he took thousands of photos of people living in Oakland, protesting in Berkeley and San Francisco, fighting for the rights of farm workers and engaging in other civil rights activities. This included interacting with individuals like Mark Comfort of the Black Panthers.
