Professor Shimizu: Emerging Feminisms, Flanked by Rappers and TV Anchors

Thursday, May 18, 2017

THE FEMINIST WIRE -- An award-winning filmmaker and film scholar, Celine Parreñas Shimizu is a professor in the School of Cinema at San Francisco State University. She writes an essay about her experience participating in a panel discussion on Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders’ representation in music, media and popular culture at San Diego State University on March 22.

“On the panel, my work as a porn scholar was what stood out. I discussed how porn can be a form of ancestry, especially for queer people,” Shimizu writes. “It is also an important mode of sex education wherein disabled people are disallowed sexuality or fat people excluded from beauty and this is the work that porn addresses in our society.”
