Alum Spencer Averick won his first Emmy Award last week, sharing Writing for a Nonfiction Program honors with Ava DuVernay. They are the writers and producers of 13TH. The Netflix documentary provides an in-depth look at the U.S. prison system, showing how it reveals the nation’s history of racial inequality.
Earlier this year Averick — an alumnus of the Broadcast and Electronic Communication Arts Department — and DuVernay garnered an Academy Award nomination for 13TH, in the Best Documentary Feature category.
Praised by Duvernay as “my long-time ace,” Averick has edited many of the acclaimed director’s projects, including the Academy Award-winning Selma and the forthcoming big-budget feature A Wrinkle in Time. His other credits include editor of two Kevin Hart comedy specials and editor and producer of the documentary Since: The Bombing of Pan Am Flight 103.
In other SF State-related Emmy news, alumnus Jeffrey Tambor (B.A., Drama, ’65) had the opportunity to win his third consecutive Lead Actor in Comedy Series award for his role on Amazon’s Transparent. However, Donald Glover of FX’s Atlanta won in this category this year.
