Faculty members Oscar Guerra and Antonio A. Ayala are among the 253 winners of the 47th Northern California Area Emmy Awards, joining 16 alumni in taking home the coveted statuettes.
Guerra and Ayala (B.A., BECA, ’13), who teach in the Broadcast and Electronic Communication Arts Department, won for Sports-News Feature/Segment-Spanish, for Estación de mi Gente, a profile of San Francisco Giants legend Tito Fuentes. The video aired on NBC Sports Bay Area. They share the award with SF Giants Productions Vice President Paul Hodges III (B.A., Radio and Television, ’01), Erwin Higueros and Norma Alejandra López. Students Jonny Trimboli, Jacob Crowell, Adam Griffith and Adrian Chen also worked on the video.
In the video, Fuentes details his journey from Cuban émigré to Major League infielder and the Giants’ Spanish-language radio announcer. Earlier this year, Estación de mi Gente won Best Short Form Sports Video at the Broadcast Education Association Festival of Media Arts.
The Northern California Area Emmy Awards, presented by the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences chapter, recognize excellence in television and online production. This year’s 253 winners in 104 categories were selected among 1,002 entries. The San Francisco State alumni combined to win 24 awards, led by Luis Godínez (B.A., Radio and Television, ’03), of San Francisco’s Univision affiliate, KDTV-14, with six awards.
The competition includes television and cable stations from the following areas: Sacramento-Stockton-Modesto, San Francisco-Oakland-San Jose, Fresno-Visalia, Honolulu, Reno, Monterey-Salinas, Chico-Redding and Eureka. The award ceremony took place June 2 at the San Francisco Jazz Center.
