Professor Tuman: Background Checks on Gun Sales Crucial for Trump Re-Election

Thursday, August 22, 2019

THE FOUR, KTVU-CHANNEL 2 (OAKLAND) -- According to a report by The Washington Post, President Trump seems to be backing off of his apparent support for stronger background checks for gun sales. KTVU’s Alex Savidge spoke to Joe Tuman, political analyst and professor at San Francisco State University, about the report.

Tuman said the president’s support of legislation for background checks will be a significant issue for voters in the 2020 election.

“If he’s going to win re-election, he's got to get more than 50 percent of the vote,,” Tuman said, “and he’s not going to do that if he doesn’t endorse something that most people in this country — the vast overwhelming majority of people in this country — think is a necessary change. Which is not just background checks, but a whole range of things that we have to do which, are just common-sense measures.”
