BBC RADIO 4 -- In “The Californian Century,” a documentary narrated by actor Stanley Tucci, San Francisco State University Professor Marc Stein discusses various aspects of modern California history.

In episode eight, Stein contributes to the story of Dianne Feinstein, the trailblazing Californian politician who took over as mayor of San Francisco after the murders of Supervisor Harvey Milk and Mayor George Moscone.

“Milk had been known for successfully building alliances with the labor movement in San Francisco, partly as a result of a massive national campaign against Coors beer, which was both anti-union and anti-gay,” said Stein, the Jamie and Phyllis Pasker Professor of History. “So Milk allied with Moscone and other progressives on the Board of Supervisors, and they are increasingly passing progressive legislation.”
