MOUNTAIN DEMOCRAT (PLACERVILLE) -- Claussen said winning an art award in high school set her firmly on her path. As a student at San Francisco State University, she learned about the elements of art, the importance of structure and knowing how things fit together. To gain technical skill she focused on rendering flowers and figures. She persistently explored, experimented and met personal challenges to grow artistically. However, it is Claussen’s ability to move beyond the technical job of painting to capture the elusive, emotional essence of a subject that is especially compelling. Claussen’s own whimsical spirit also shines through, infusing her work with a feeling of fun, something that is not surprising for an artist who uses music and dancing as part of her process.
