WASHINGTON POST -- Yumi Wilson is a professor at San Francisco State University, a lecturer at the University of California at Berkeley and the author of “The Social Media Journalist Handbook.” She wrote this op-ed for the Washington Post.
“As a woman of Black and Japanese heritage — and the mother of a 23-year-old who is white, Native American, Japanese and Black — I do understand the discomfort of trying to define oneself by checking a single box,” writes Wilson, who teaches in the Broadcast and Electronic Communication Arts Department. “But I also teach at two California public universities and can attest to how demoralizing it is for students of color not to see more people who look like them — both in the classroom and in positions of leadership.”
