Sachi Cunningham appears shoulder-deep in ocean waters

SURFLINE -- As a journalist, documentarian, teacher and photographer, Sachi Cunningham is somewhat of a veteran in her field. So, when she swims out at double-overhead Ocean Beach or bobs in the channel at Maverick’s, it ain’t her first rodeo.

And that’s where you’ll find her – when she’s not teaching multimedia journalism at San Francisco State University, or tending to mom duties for her 8-year-old daughter — in the water, shooting. This season was no different, despite the crazy times we’re all living in.

“I’m on sabbatical from my job as an associate professor at SF State and, pre-COVID, I had my sights on living in Hawaii this winter,” Cunningham said. “I think I would have cried if I was in Hawaii watching all of this action in Northern California, so I guess there was a silver lining to the lockdown.”
