Dear members of the LCA community,
It is with mixed emotions that I share news that School of Cinema Director and Professor Celine Parreñas Shimizu was named the dean of the Arts Division at the University of California, Santa Cruz. She will begin her new position July 1.
Celine joined San Francisco State University in 2015 as a visiting professor in Cinema and Human Sexuality Studies. The following year, she joined the Cinema faculty as a tenured professor. She was appointed School of Cinema director in 2019.
While her departure is a real loss for the School of Cinema and the entire San Francisco State University community, I am so pleased for her career opportunity at UC Santa Cruz, and I am proud of her accomplishments at San Francisco State. She guided a large and complex department through a most challenging year, thrived amidst adversity and built lasting relationships with students, alumni, donors, faculty and staff.
Celine amplified the powerful anti-racist voice of the School of Cinema and the College of Liberal & Creative Arts, and helped envision the College’s new equity and leadership development program for faculty. We will miss her strength and her commitment, and we wish her well.
