The G Spot. Gentrification, Urban Transformation and Queer San Francisco: Gay Tourism, Urban Development conversation

GLBT tourists have been drawn to San Francisco for many decades -- and many have set down roots. Non-queer tourists have also been attracted to the city's reputation as a "wide-open town." In the past few decades, however, gay merchant groups and the city of San Francisco have mounted strategic efforts to enhance visitorship through GLBT-related initiatives. San Francisco Travel Association Senior Vice President of Public Policy Jon Ballesteros and AIDS Housing Alliance Director Brian Basinger discuss how GLBT-related tourism has shaped neighborhood development and gentrification. The GLBT History Museum’s 2014 – 15 Special Program Series, The G Spot: Gentrification, Transformation and Queer San Francisco, tackles how the history of GLBT belonging and marginalization has been intertwined with the city’s processes of urban renovation. From September 2014 through March 2015, the GLBT History Museum will host monthly programs to delve into this timely concern.
Series curated by Women and Gender Studies Professor Nan Alamilla Boyd, Raquel Gutíerrez and Don Romesburg. The series is funded, in part, by a grant from SF State’s Office of Research and Sponsored Programs.
