A Russian Hero's Journey Through Time and Space: Pavel Korchagin in China
Thursday, September 25, 2014, 4:00 pm to 5:00 pm
Assistant Professor of Chinese Frederik H. Green explores the discursive complexity of Nicholas Ostrovskii's socialist-realist classic "How the Steel Was Tempered" in China. Tracing its protagonist's many transformations -- from war hero and popular icon of the Mao era to unlikely role model during the reform era and, finally, symbol of nostalgia -- the talk illustrates how the novel has been indigenized thoroughly to become inseparable from modern Chinese revolutionary and popular culture.
