SAN FRANCISCO CHRONICLE -- “East Side Sushi” is a classic example of a low-budget indie finding its audience through film festivals, with the resulting buzz attracting theatrical distributors. It happened all the time in the ’90s in the days of “Slacker” and “Clerks,” but these days many small films are going straight from festivals to streaming and video on demand. Lucero, a graduate of San Francisco State’s film school who lives in Berkeley, says he has offers from more than one distributor, and “I need to decide soon — I really want this film out there, with more eyeballs to see it.” It’s no wonder. The film features some nice performances, including Mexican actress Diana Elizabeth Torres as the former food cart worker and single mother who tries to buck tradition at a sushi joint that prides itself in being a fully Japanese operation.
