Thomas Ingmire, among the best known calligrapher in the United States, and John Windle, an antiquarian book dealer who specializes in illuminated manuscripts and 19th century books, give a lecture. Thomas Ingmire

Thomas Ingmire’s art training initially grew from the study and practice of landscape design. In 1977 he became the first foreign member to be elected fellow of the Society of Scribes and Illuminators in London. In 1980 he received a Newberry Fellowship for independent study and research at the Newberry Library in Chicago. Ingmire’s work has focused primarily on the exploration of calligraphy as a fine arts medium. He has exhibited widely in the U.S., and his works can be found in the San Francisco Public Library’s Special Collections, Newberry Library in Chicago, Victoria Albert Museum in London, Sackner Archive of Concrete and Visual Poetry, Stiftung Academy of Art in Berlin and many other public and private collections worldwide. Since 1978, Ingmire has given much energy to teaching and conducting workshops throughout the U.S., Canada, Australia, several countries in Europe, Japan and Hong Kong. He is involved in collaborative work with a number artists and poets, including the Pablo Neruda series of books with Manuel Neri, work as an illuminator on the Saint John’s Bible project, and work with poets Tsering Wangmo and David Jones Annwn.

John Windle

John Windle has been dealing in rare books, manuscripts and book-related prints and paintings since 1967. After training with Bernard Quaritch Limited in London and John Howell-Books in San Francisco, he opened his business in his bedroom in San Francisco in 1974 and formed a partnership with Ron Randall to form Randall and Windle in 1975. Windle is a former master of the press of the Roxburghe Club of San Francisco and a founding member of the Colophon Club, a member of the Association Internationale de Bibliophilie, Grolier Club, Caxton Club, Book Club of California, Antiquarian Booksellers Association of America, International League of Antiquarian Booksellers, Provincial Booksellers Fairs Association and Independent Online Booksellers Association. He has served on several boards and committees and was a governor of the Antiquarian Booksellers Association and chair of its public relations and publications committees.
