Alum Danny Glover Encourages College Grads to be Active in Community

THE TIMES AND DEMOCRAT (ORANGEBURG, SOUTH CAROLINA) -- Danny Glover, the acclaimed actor, producer and humanitarian, was on hand to render words of encouragement to the graduates. Glover urged them to not just think about themselves and their goals, but to reach back into the community and become servants of it. He referenced the work of community activists such as Robert Moses, a math educator who founded the Algebra Project in the 1980s. The Algebra Project is a national mathematics literacy effort aimed at helping low-income students and students of color successfully achieve mathematical skills. Voorhees President Cleveland Sellers Jr. said he first “ran across” Glover at San Francisco State University in 1967. “I have watched his rising star,” Sellers said. Glover was presented a citation and an honorary doctor of humane letters degree from the college. State Sen. John L. Scott, a Voorhees trustee, presented Glover with a resolution recognizing his accomplishments.
