PITTSBURGH POST-GAZETTE -- Visitors who encounter “Baby: Corps of Re-Discovery” at the park Overlook may need a moment (and some signage) to connect Michael Arcega’s hand-built Pacific outrigger canoe (Baby) with the Lewis and Clark expedition. But once they enter his process, puzzling the story line becomes addictive. The Philippines native and assistant professor at San Francisco State University has navigated his craft down some of the rivers the explorers traveled, arriving in Pittsburgh, where many argue the expedition began with Meriwether Lewis overseeing the construction of his keelboat here in 1803. The project playfully intermingles cultures while more seriously positing what would happen if Manifest Destiny moved in the other direction, Ms. Wasserman explained.
