Alum Eileen David Paints 'Where Past Overlaps with Present'

SAN FRANCISCO CHRONICLE -- Anyone familiar with the distinctive juxtaposition of industrial landscape and residential charm in San Francisco’s southeastern neighborhoods will immediately recognize the sweeping views and sunlit hilltop crosswalks of Potrero Hill and Bernal Heights in Eileen David’s delicate brushstrokes. Her latest series of small-scale oil paintings (some only 6 by 6 inches), on view through July 25 in her fourth solo exhibition at Paul Thiebaud Gallery, provides remarkably expressive perspectives on what David calls the “urbanscapes of certain neighborhoods that feel timeless, where the past overlaps with the present.” “I was wowed by Wayne Thiebaud’s Potrero Hill paintings and of course by Diebenkorn,” says David, who moved in 1975 from her native New York to San Francisco. She studied painting at San Francisco State and Academy of Art before getting her Master of Fine Arts from San Jose State. For the last nine years, David has taught at Skyline College.
