The Arab Peace Initiative of 2002 is a bold initiative of the Arab League for a comprehensive resolution of the Arab-Israeli conflict through negotiations. It would lead to the creation of a Palestinian state, and Israel would receive recognition from the Arab and Islamic nations. Its supporters believe that the initiative would provide greater peace and security for the whole region, not only Palestine and Israel.

Salem is a lecturer on democracy, human rights and conflict resolution at Al Quds University, author of many publications on these subjects and director of the Center for Democracy and Community Development in East Jerusalem. The center has been actively involved in promoting the Arab Peace Initiative as a basis for comprehensive peace since 2007, as one of its many peace projects.
