Three School of Design students and recent graduates won this year’s Design Management Institute Student Essay Competition, sponsored by 3M and Oracle.
The SF State winners are:
- Chiamaka Onyemelukwe’s essay addressed the development of her graduate creative work project: “Creating a Female Superhero Design Narrative Role Model and Career Stimuli for Young African-American and Other Women of Color.” She is a Master of Arts candidate in Industrial Arts.
- Laura Gutierrez’s essay addressed her senior research and development project, titled “Community Learning Environments: Involvement of Low Income Youth in Redesigning Their Learning Environment (Mid-Peninsula Boys and Girls Club, San Mateo County).” Gutierrez completed her Bachelor of Science in Industrial Design this year.
- Enoch Haile’s essay addressed his post-graduate interests in applying to Ph.D. programs in biotechnology/industrial technology product innovation. Haile earned his Bachelor of Science in Industrial Design in 2014.
Winners received complimentary registration to the Design Management Institute’s Leadership Conference in Boston and passes to the Innovation Workshop, Innovation Walk and the Design Value Awards. The package is valued at more than $2,000. At the conference, the students assisted institute staff as liaisons, giving them an opportunity to network, meet speakers and meet managers and executives.
