Professor McDaniel Comments on SF Mayor Speaking Out Against Trump

SAN FRANCISCO CHRONICLE -- Earlier this month, while speaking at the Islamic Society of San Francisco, Lee condemned Trump’s proposed policy requiring Muslims in the United States to register with the government, comparing it to Japanese internment camps and the Chinese Exclusion Act. These actions are hardly controversial in San Francisco, but they still show Lee stepping into a public leadership role that he hasn’t often embraced, said Jason McDaniel, assistant professor of Political Science at San Francisco State University. He said those kinds of speeches are “one of the most important” aspects of being mayor. “You are one of the few elected officials who has a citywide mandate to represent the entire city rather than just one district,” McDaniel said. “The mayor needs to keep showing that kind of thing and translate that into policy goals and really give that sense of speaking for San Francisco as a whole.”
