Inside/Outside: Working Our Way Out of the Damaged Now (Design as Dialectics)

Inside/Outside is a discourse manifested as an exhibition of experimental design work. Critical and speculative design and design futures are practices that challenge our expectations, propose new ideas and encourage discourse. This is not the usual form of design that solves problems, improves and persuades. It is a practice that uses design methods and creates design artifacts that provide critique and commentary on culture. Inside/Outside is a discourse within this practice with a specific philosophical question, on how design can reveal the unrealized potentialities of our world (as explicated by a passage by Frankfurt philosopher Theodor Adorno). The exhibition's aim is to offer a dialogue on design as a practice that can "dialectically" change perceptions and reveal unexpressed potentialities. The theme, the concept and the assumptions are experimental by nature. It is a proposition, and its expectations are open ended, and so the exhibition offers design that will surprise and challenge. Curated by Joshua Singer and Virginia Tassinari in collaboration with DESIS Philosophy Talk @Studio Time and LUCA Arts DESIS Lab. Tuesdays - Fridays, 11am - 4pm. Gallery talk: March 1, 4pm - 6pm. Design Gallery

The Design Gallery’s mission is to inform and educate the campus community, the design community and general public in the diversity of practices and issues of design in its past, its present and future. The gallery functions as a collaborative teaching and learning workspace for students, faculty and internal and external partners and as a public forum, inviting deeper engagement in design practices and discourses.

Activities include individual and group exhibitions, lectures, symposia and publications spanning industrial, graphic, interactive, apparel and interior design. Themes and discourse span the contemporary and historical, the theoretical and practical, the commercial and social and the expansive implications of design. The Design Gallery is based in SF State’s School of Design.
