Poetry Clips of the Week: Navigating Space for Women

These video clips are the part of a series highlighting recent readings held by SF State’s Poetry Center and American Poetry Archives. Visit this website regularly for fresh poetic content.

On March 8, The Poetry Center and the Museum of the African Diaspora presented artist Asya Abdrahman and writers Faith Adiele and Tonya M. Foster. They presented their work and responded to questions from the audience. The program, Navigating Space for Women, took place at at the San Francisco museum, as part of the exhibition Where Is Here and in celebration of International Women’s Day.

Faith Adiele reads from her manuscript The African Viking Girl’s Guide to Returning, which traces four generations of her family on three continents.

 

Asya Abdrahman shows images of some of her art in a presentation titled “Here I Am Human: Intersections Between Art and Activism.”

 

Tonya Foster and Asya Abdrahman speak to the notion of a lack of a homeland within one’s home nation and the alternate idea of “belonging everywhere.”
