Will Facebook's Promise to Increase Privacy Protection Ring Hollow? Professor Tuman Discusses

USA TODAY/ASSOCIATED PRESS -- San Francisco State Professor Joe Tuman says Mark Zuckerberg’s congressional testimony promising better privacy protection rings hollow unless Facebook changes its business model.

“The bottom line is his platform, like many social-media platforms, is monetized on the basis of trading private information,” Tuman says.

Tuman adds that he is unconvinced by Zuckerberg’s testimony.

“Most of this is evasion, frankly,” he says. “Mr. Zuckerberg is lucky to live in a democracy that allows him freedom of movement and freedom of space and the opportunity to make as much money as he’s making. It should come with the responsibility to preserve and protect that same sovereignty and that same democracy.”
