In an alluring recital, soprano Christine Brandes and pianist Eric Moe explore the intoxicating world of early Modernism featuring a performance of Schoenberg's groundbreaking cycle The Book of the Hanging Gardens and the lyric eroticism of Debussy's Chansons de Bilitis. The program also includes excerpts from Schubert's Schwanengesang and excerpts from two song cycles by Moe, written for Brandes: The Sonnets to Orpheus and Tough Songs. Featured poets: Pierre Louÿs, Stefan George, Heinrich Heine, Rainer Maria Rilke (translated by Stephen Mitchell) and Dorianne Laux. Free.

Christine Brandes

Noted for her radiant, crystalline voice and superb musicianship, soprano Christine Brandes brings her committed artistry to a repertoire ranging from 17th century to newly composed works, performing at many of the world’s most distinguished festivals and concert series in programs spanning from recitals and chamber music to oratorio and opera. She is an associate professor of Music at San Francisco State University.

Eric Moe

Former San Francisco State Professor Eric Moe (1954 – ) is the composer of what The New York Times has called “music of winning exuberance.” As a pianist and keyboardist, Moe has premiered and performed works by a wide variety of composers. A founding member of the San Francisco-based Earplay ensemble, he co-directs the Music on the Edge new music concert series in Pittsburgh and is Andrew W. Mellon Professor of Composition and Theory at University of Pittsburgh.
