Surveying the Material World of the Gila River Incarceration Camp

Koji Lau-Ozawa, a doctoral candidate in anthropology at Stanford University, discusses his research on the archaeology of Japanese migration. His project examines the Gila River incarceration camp in southern Arizona, where his grandparents were imprisoned during World War II. Material collected at this site speaks to the ingenuity and perseverance of the Japanese American community confined at Gila River, literally transforming the desert landscape.
