Celebrating its fifth decade of performances, the Musicians from Marlboro touring program was created as an extension of Vermont’s Marlboro Music Festival. Musicians from Marlboro tours are noted not only for their joyous and thoroughly prepared performances but also for offering valuable touring experience to artists at the beginning of their careers and for featuring programs of unusual as well as beloved chamber repertoire. Since their inception, the Musicians from Marlboro tours have introduced such great talents as Yefim Bronfman, Pamela Frank, Richard Goode, Jaime Laredo, Murray Perahia, Paula Robison, Sir András Schiff, Peter Serkin, Richard Stoltzman, Christian Tetzlaff, Benita Valente and Harold Wright, among others. They have also included other exceptional artists now heard in the Brentano, Chicago, Emerson, Guarneri, Juilliard, Orion, Miami, Muir, Tokyo, St. Lawrence and Ying quartets as well as the Beaux Arts, Eroica, Mannes and Kalichstein-Laredo-Robinson trios and the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center.
Program
Musicians from Marlboro will present a program of music ranging from the Classical Era to the present, including Franz Joseph Haydn’s Trio in C for Violin, Cello and Piano, Hob. XV:27; Zoltán Kodály’s Serenade for 2 Violins and Viola, Op, 12; and Maurice Ravel’s iconic Piano Trio in A minor (1914). The program will also feature the world premiere of the Duo for Violin and Viola by Ken Ueno (b. 1970). A recipient of the Rome Prize and the Berlin Prize, Ken Ueno, is a composer-vocalist-sound artist who is currently on the faculty of UC Berkeley, where he holds the Jerry and Evelyn Hemmings Chambers Distinguished Professor Chair in Music. Ensembles and performers who have played Ken’s music include Kim Kashkashian and Robyn Schulkowsky, Mayumi Miyata,Teodoro Anzellotti, Aki Takahashi, Wendy Richman, Greg Oakes, Boston Modern Orchestra Project (BMOP), Alarm Will Sound, San Francisco Contemporary Music Players, the Nieuw Ensemble, and Frances-Marie Uitti. His music has been performed at such venues as Lincoln Center, the Kennedy Center, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, MusikTriennale Köln Festival, the Muziekgebouw, Ars Musica, Warsaw Autumn, Other Minds, the Hopkins Center, Spoleto USA, Steim and at the Norfolk Music Festival. He has performed as soloist in his vocal concerto with the BMOP in New York and Boston, the Warsaw Philharmonic, the Lithuanian National Symphony, the Thailand Philharmonic Orchestra and with orchestras in North Carolina, Pittsburgh, and California. Ken holds a Ph.D. from Harvard University. A monograph CD of three orchestral concertos was released on the BMOP/sound label.
Residency activities
In addition to the concert, Musicians from Marlboro will conduct residency activities in the School of Music, under the auspices of the Morrison Chamber Music Center on Monday, March 11, at noon. In addition to the concert, Musicians from Marlboro will participate in a pre-concert talk on Sunday, March 10, at 2 p.m. in Knuth Hall (Room 132) in SF State’s Creative Arts Building, under the auspices of the Morrison Chamber Music Center. The pre-concert event is free and open to the public to observe. No tickets are required.

Admission-free tickets for Musicians from Marlboro concert will be available beginning February 17, 2019, through the Morrison Artists Series website or through Simpletix. Tickets may not be reserved by email or U.S. mail. Reserved tickets may be printed at home, displayed on a phone or other device or picked up at the box at will call on the day of the event. Box office hours are one hour prior to events.
