Arpilleras: Crafts On Burlaps by Refugee Women

This humanitarian project is rooted in an Andean countercultural method for working on the trauma of women who have suffered gender and political violence. Bárbara Torres brought this idea to Bremen, Germany, to help refugee women from Syrian, Afghanistan and African countries. Arpilleras provides women with a safe place, skills to express their own histories, and a community where can thrive, feeling less lonely. Free.

Torres will lead a workshop on the creation of arpilleras and give a talk on her work with refugee women to create a safe place for them. Other speakers include SF State faculty members Juanita Darling, Mohammad Salama, Lubna Safi, Olivia Albiero and Mitra Ara.
