Thank you for encouraging your students to participate in the third annual LCA Undergraduate Research Showcase. We are excited to include the work of more than 400 students this year, and we’re looking forward to learning more about their projects!
Below are important logistical details for faculty and students:
- Please review the schedule to make sure all of your participating students are on it, and then share it with them, so that they can make note of the time and location when they are scheduled. If any names have been inadvertently left off, please contact Gitanjali G. Shahani, gshahani@sfsu.edu, as soon as possible.
- We encourage all students to be there at least 30 minutes prior to their assigned time, in order to set up their work. They will register at front desk of the Seven Hills Conference Center, after which they will be directed to their assigned room either at Seven Hills or the Towers conference facilities. There will be lunch and refreshments.
- The scheduling committee has worked hard to accommodate requests for morning or afternoon times slots, but we anticipate some students will have scheduling conflicts with other classes even within these slots. In these instances, we encourage students to seek permission from professors to attend the showcase.
- If students participating in oral presentations wish to bring any visuals, these can be included either as PowerPoint or PDF file formats, which must be brought on a USB flash drive. The presentation file should be clearly labeled (for example: name-presentation.ppt). Any media such as video, audio, etc., should be embedded in the PowerPoint or PDF file. Students cannot use their own laptops for presentation.
- Students with posters will be provided with easels. The easels do accommodate different sizes, but posters do need to be mounted on foam core.
- Students with installations and displays in the morning are welcome to set up before 9 a.m. Afternoon installations can begin set up at 12:30 p.m.
- Students screening films should arrive with their presentations on a flash drive (Powerpoint or PDF. .mov or .mpeg4). If the screening is part of a large class, it would be ideal if students brought all of them as a single file.

- One important feature of this showcase is that students will get short feedback from faculty experts. This is part of what makes the experience exciting and memorable for the students, and the feedback has important pedagogical value as well. If you can volunteer to serve as a faculty expert and talk to any student from any discipline about their submission, we would greatly appreciate your participation. Please fill out the survey to share your availability with us or contact Professor Bridget Gelms (bgelms@sfsu.edu) with your availability. Please know that we will only ask for an hour or two of your time (in most cases, just one hour). Just as your students will benefit from having a faculty expert in attendance at your panels and presentations, just a little time will greatly benefit your colleagues and their students.
- As you know, the showcase will be held Wednesday May 8, 9 a.m. – 4 p.m., with a reception from 4 p.m. to 5 p.m. at the Seven Hills Conference Center. Dean Andrew Harris will announce winners of our iPad raffle at the reception, followed by a cake celebration of students’ work. All participating students are eligible for the iPad, but they must be present at the reception to claim their prizes.
